Why?
Remember: Show-offs are never forgotten but definitely not cherished. To make a memorable first impression, you should show you are a team player and that you support your co-interviewees. Show that you are listening attentively!
To support other interviewees' statements and demonstrate you are listening carefully, you can:
Non-verbally you can:
✓ Nod
It shows support and that you understand what the person is saying.
✓ Smile
It encourages the speaker to continue and communicates that you agree with the person.
✓ Keep eye contact
Always keep your eyes on the speaker.
Verbally you can:
✓ Paraphrase:
Rephrase something that someone said to show you fully understand the meaning and add your personal take on it.
✓ Share similar experiences:
That will show you successfully understand their meaning and build rapport. It is also a valuable opportunity to show how you've dealt with a similar situation in the past.
✓ Recall previously shared information:
Try to remember key points and previously mentioned concepts that show you were paying attention and could retain and recall specific information.
Take these tips for a spin and practice around when having conversations in groups. The more you practice, the more natural it becomes.
