Licking your fingers is the recommended technique for opening bags, as it makes it easier.

The following guidelines will give you an excellent place to start with the basics of bagging, especially if you’re handling plastic bags: ✓ Make sure your bagging station is adequately organized. Have extra bags under your register and a wet sponge at the corner of the bagging station. ✓ Put the bags on the holder. Line up the two holes on the bag handles up with the two arms. ✓ If you’re on a busy day, you can put two bags on at a time, but more than that may impede the progress of your work and get in the way more than it helps. ✓ Use the sponge to moist your fingers. This facilitates opening the bags and is more hygienic than licking them.
