People who are deaf may not have English as their first language.

Some Deaf or hard-of-hearing people may have American Sign Language (ASL) as their first language and may not be fluent in English. That's why written communication might not work with them at all! For this reason, you should never start a conversation with a person with a hearing impairment with a written message.
