Why?
Everybody struggles with self-control a little bit. Learning how to develop strategies for managing yourself is what distinguishes you from poor leaders.
Consider these two scenarios:
✓ Stressful situations
✓ Stress-free situations
For different reasons, both require us to have self-control when dealing with daily matters.
When people are under stress, they must come up with ways to calm themselves down. But, quite often, people lack self-control and act impulsively even when everything is going well.
For example:
✓Deciding on something before having all the facts or relevant opinions.
✓Doing something before considering all the different people it might affect or what the impact might be.
✓Starting a conversation without looking around to see how much privacy there is.
In this case, training yourself to wait goes a long way in preventing regrets. When people can control themselves, they think beyond the current moment to the broader picture.
