The Ferber method takes about 1 week to start working.
Why?
If the plan is followed closely, it should take around 7 days for your baby to learn to fall asleep on their own if you are using the Ferber Method. Here is the 1 week plan:
- Once the room is set up for sleep, follow your bedtime routine and put your baby into the crib drowsy, but awake.
1. Leave the room for 3 minutes, and then return to soothe baby if she is crying. Do not pick up your baby. Leave the room again and wait 5 minutes before you go back in to soothe. Then extend the wait time to 10 minutes until they fall asleep
2. The second night start at 5 minutes, then 10, then 12.
3. The third night start at 10, then 12, then 15.
4. The fourth night 12, 15, 17
5. The fifth night 15, 17, 20
6. The sixth night, 17, 20, 25
7. The seventh night, 20, 25, 30.
The idea is that your baby will learn to fall asleep on their own within 1 week. Your baby will know that you are there but will no longer need you to reassure them.
You must repeat this process for overnight wakings too.
