This process has 5 steps.

The process is actually only 4 steps: 1. Fill your container 3/4 full with vegetable oil. If you don't have a lot of vegetable oil, then choose a smaller container. 2. Fill it up the rest of the way with water. What happens to the water? Be sure to get your kids to observe this. 3. Once the water has completely settled, choose a color dye and add it to the jar. How many drops is up to you. The more you add, the darker the color will be. Again, watch what happens when the color drops hit the oil. What happens once they reach the water? 4. Once all of the color drops have mixed with the water, drop in the Alka-Seltzer tablet. What happened? This is the "lava lamp" part of the experiment so MAKE SURE that your kids are the ones to drop in the Alka-Seltzer and that they see the reaction! The next slide will explain WHY this reaction happened.
