Why?

You should listen to understand, not to respond. And listen more than you speak, too. Make sure that your body language (including facial expressions) is in check, and initiate the conversation when you have something to share. Let your colleagues know that you are open for them to share with you, too. As much as possible, communicate in person so that messages don't get mixed up!
