Why?
To deliver constructive negative feedback, you must be honest and empathetic. Taking these three critical steps will surely help you carry it out:
✓Signal good intentions - when you demonstrate good intentions, the other person doesn’t get defensive. Provide regular feedback, both positive and negative, and express empathy when communicating that the other person hasn’t achieved expectations. You could say, “I know you prefer working alone and that it’s hard for you to ask others for help.”
✓Describe concrete behavior - describe facts, and avoid judging or labeling. Be objective, and say something like, “Last month, you missed two deadlines.” When you describe concrete behavior, there’s no evaluation, and as a result, there’s no room for defensive behavior.
✓Explain the impact - explain why the person’s behavior is bad for you and the organization. Say, “Since this is a collaborative project, when you are late, the other team members are late, and the whole project can be delayed.”
After that, allow space for your employee to find out the root causes, and listen carefully. Then, you can ask for a specific action or even agree on a solution together. Remember, effective feedback is the one that plans the way forward.
