Why?
Understanding triggers is one essential ability to develop as a leader. Most influential leaders not only know what their triggers are, but they have strategies for managing them.
Triggers are echoes of difficult past experiences, either physical or emotional. A trigger can be seen as a red button, and when it is pressed, it causes a strong emotional reaction, usually much bigger than what the situation calls for.
Identifying our triggers is essential for not being surprised by them, and it also enables us to manage our emotions instead of being controlled by them.
Time and again, conflicts between people, including senior executives, consist of them triggering each other even subconsciously. The work environment tends to set off triggers, for they usually reproduce the hierarchy of a family unit. That’s why it’s relatively common for workers, including leaders, to unknowingly role play family issues in the workplace.
