Tip#1: Know the top 8 allergens and your products!
Yes, people can be allergic to pork, but bacon didn't make the top 8 list of major allergens. The FDA's top 8 major allergen categories are:
5. Tree nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts)
8. Shellfish (shrimp, crab, or lobster.)
These ingredients are often referred to as 'sensitive ingredients'.
We cannot take food allergies lightly! They can pose a threat to someone's life. So, whenever a customer asks you about an ingredient, help them find the exact information they need. The FDA requires companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages.
But, if you are doubtful about the answer to the customer's question, make sure to ask your manager (or a more experienced coworker). In case you can't find the answer, let the customers decide for themselves.
