Quite often, retailers require payment of fees for items missing their tags or opened packaging. Some retailers may not accept damaged products. Others offer store credit for returns to ensure that the money is still spent with them. You could apply such conditions for items on sale, for example.
You might take this opportunity to suggest a product similar to the one being returned, but avoid being pushy. There’s a thin line between helpful and brash. Don’t cross that line, and be respectful.
